Writing the Admissions Essay
By Sherril Steele-Carlin
Graduating from college takes years of hard work, determination, and study, but one of the hardest things about college may be writing the essay that gets you there! Admission essays have to tell the college why you want to attend, but more, they have to let the school know why they should choose you over another student, so you have to play up your strengths, and make them really WANT you as a student!
Why do you want to Attend?
The college staff wants to know why you've chosen their particular institution to continue your education. You should praise the college and its' reputation, without laying it on too thick. Do some research into the academic major you want to study, and let the college know you've looked at their school, and know its' reputation for excellence. Make sure you understand what is required for you to enroll, and let them know you have the requirements and are excited to attend.
Your Background
Here's where you sell yourself. Let the school know your GPA, your extra-curricular activities, and anything that you have done academically that stands out. The school staff will want to know why they should accept you above other students, so you need to show you are a good student, motivated, involved, and may even continue your education beyond a BA at the school. If you're related to any alumni, here's the time to mention it, along with all those high school accomplishments you're so proud of.
What you Can do for Them
A lot of students don't think about this, but most colleges want to know what you bring to the table during your college years. Here's the place to mention your community activities, how you plan to become involved in the school and its' culture during your college years, and what experience you bring, such as student government, community volunteering, and other activities that make you stand out from the crowd. This is more than academic excellence, this section should show how you interact with other students, with instructors, and even with staff, and how you can add to the college by bringing your own unique vision to the school.
Close with a Bang
Make sure the college knows you WANT to attend. Here is the place to thank them for their time, reiterate your interest, and tell them you really hope to hear from them soon. Then end the essay on a positive note, and hope for the best!
