There’s Nothing Wrong with That: Seinfeld Season 4 on DVD

By Jonathan Berohn

When the first three seasons of Seinfeld came out on DVD last year, I—and many other Seinfeld fans—rejoiced.  Finally we had the funniest show in recent time on DVD.  As great as this treasure trove of comedy was, I couldn’t shake the slight disappoint of knowing the best was yet to come and that I still had to wait. Well—now that season 4 is out, the best is finally here.

Master of Their Domain

As every single Seinfeld fan knows, “master of your domain” is the catch phrase to the best Seinfeld episode—The Contest.  The plot is simply absurd (who can, er…refrain the longest) and the high jinks are hilarious.  Season 4 isn’t just 1 great episode, though.  In fact, the disc that The Contest is on might be the funniest television DVD ever produced.  The other episodes on the disc include The Bubbleboy, The Cheever Letters, and The Virgin.  Other discs include favorites like The Outing and The Junior Mint.  For fans, I don’t need to say any more.  For the uninitiated, suffice it to say that these episodes are funnier than anything and everything that’s been on TV since and—most importantly—they don’t feel dated at all in reprise.

The Extras

Like the initial release of seasons 1-3, season 4 offers plenty of commentary, deleted scenes, and behind the scenes stuff.  There is also some Seinfeld stand-up comedy thrown into the mix for your viewing and laughing pleasure.  Once again, though, the menu system on these discs is non-intuitive and clunky.  Admittedly, that’s a minor quibble, but the best sit-com in recent memory can certainly do a little better on that front.
