The Net: Identity Theft is Real

By Sherril Steele-Carlin

The Net is really more than a sci-fi movie, it's downright scary to think this might happen to any of us who live and work in a computerized world, and in fact, since this film's release in 1995, identity theft through some of the means discussed in this film has become an all too common occurrence.

Star Sandra Bullock has been in effect deleted from the world and this film follows her in her fight to get her identity back while discrediting the computer conspiracy which deleted her in the first place. Co-starring Jeremy Northam and Dennis Miller, this thriller is fast paced and full of chase scenes and less devoted to the actual technology that makes up the basis of the plot. It is a highly believable story, especially 10 years later when most everyone is painfully aware just how real this tale is today.

The two-sided DVD is offered in both the widescreen (1.85:1 aspect ratio) and regular version, along with vivid Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound. Subtitles are available in English, Spanish, and Korean. There's also a French and Spanish soundtrack.

DVD Additional Features

Unfortunately, this DVD doesn't include a lot of special features. In fact, there isn't even a theatrical trailer, which is a disappointment. With the technology portrayed in this film, there were plenty of opportunities for extra features and behind the scenes footage. The film is great; it would have been a better DVD with a little more background and insight into its production. There is a featurette and an HBO special, "Inside the Net" included with the 1998 DVD release.
