How to Choose Your Design Style

By Sherril Steele-Carlin

Perhaps one of the most perplexing parts of interior design is picking your own individual style. Deciding just what kind of design you enjoy the most isn't quick or easy and it can be daunting, too. However, once you choose your own unique style, the process of decorating your home will be much easier!

First Things First

First, think about your design space now and the pieces you already own. Which styles do you love, and which styles are you not so crazy about? What feels comfortable to you, and what makes you shudder; if you're really are honest with yourself?

Imagine the fabrics you enjoy, the furniture styles you long for, and the colors that perk you up and make you feel at home. Once you have some ideas about what you like and don't like, it's time to go shopping!

Walk and Talk Design

Take a walk through several furniture and design stores. Pick out forms and colors that you find really appealing. Talk to interior designers and find out what those styles say about color, design, and your personal fashion sense. As you look at a variety of model interiors you should begin to get a sense of what really attracts you in style, color, and form.

Think about the room you want to decorate, too. A bathroom may be a cozy, comfortable space, while a kitchen may make more sense with smooth, clean lines and ultra-modern appliances. The design style may depend at least a little on the room and what it dictates.

Once you've gotten an idea of the furnishings and colors that really appeal to you, pore over interior design books and magazines. They will give you even more ideas about room design, what's available, and what styles mix and match most effectively.

No Rules

Remember, there are plenty of decorating styles to choose from, and there are no hard and fast "rules" when it comes to interior design. Foremost should be what makes you feel comfortable and "at home." It is your living space, you know. You might want to combine shabby chic with a touch of modern or Scandinavian style, or Adirondack with country or log cabin. How about the bright colors of the Caribbean blended with sleek, modern lines? It's up to you, and the sky's the limit when it comes to combining styles and looks.

There are so many design styles to choose from, chances are you can find one (or two or three) that really appeal to your senses. Choosing your own design style will take some time and some research, but you don't have to redo the whole house at once! When you discover the style that's right for you, you can take your time creating rooms that resonate with your own special design melody.
