Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies in a Gift Jar
By Sherril Steele-Carlin
These are totally yummy!
I love oatmeal cookies, and my husband loves chocolate chip, so these are a nice blend. I first got this recipe as a gift jar with the dry ingredients layered in the jar. I loved the idea, and the cookies were so simple to put together, I kept the recipe because I liked it so much. These cookies are just right—moist, chewy, and full of nuts and chips, just the way I like them. You don't have to add the chocolate chips if you don't want to, they turn out just fine without them, too.
To layer the ingredients in the jar, mix together the first four dry ingredients, then place the flour mixture in the bottom of a mason jar. Next, pack in the brown sugar. Next, place the rolled oats on top of the brown sugar. Place a layer of chocolate chips, and top off with a handful of walnuts (if desired) to fill the jar. Seal it tightly, and decorate the lid, if you prefer. Refrigerate the jar to keep the brown sugar from hardening.
- 1 c. All-purpose Flour
- 1/2 t. Baking Soda
- 1/2 t. Baking Powder
- 1/2 t. Salt
- 1 c. Light Brown Sugar, firmly packed
- 1 1/4 c. Old-fashioned Rolled Oats
- Chocolate Chips, Handful
- Walnuts, Handful
Directions to Put on the Label
- 1/2 c. Butter, softened
- 1 Egg
- 2 t. Vanilla
In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, egg, and vanilla until combined. Slowly add other ingredients from jar, and mix well. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on greased cookie sheet. Using the back of a spoon, flatten cookies slightly. (They will spread a bit, so leave room between them). Bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes or until slightly browned. Makes about 3 dozen cookies
If you don't get this mix in a jar, mix together the four dry ingredients, then add the remaining ingredients to the flour mixture, (except the butter, egg, and vanilla), then follow the above directions for mixing and baking. Enjoy!
