Cat Treat Recipes for a Happy Cat

Do you have a picky pet? Sometimes, making homemade treats for your cat will get them to eat a treat they might not enjoy otherwise. Homemade treats are healthier for your cats, too, because you can control what goes into the treats, and what doesn't. Here are some great recipes for yummy cat treats that will have your kitties begging for more!
Apple Pie Pet Treats
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg
- 1 Fuji apple (peeled, cored and finely grated)
- 2 tbsp. olive oil
- 2 tbsp. milk
- 1 tsp. brown sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grate the Fuji apple into a large bowl.
Add vanilla, egg, olive oil and milk.
In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon and flour.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until completely mixed (it should form a stiff ball of dough). You may need to adjust the amount of milk to get the right consistency.
Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface until it is approximately 1/4-inch thick.
Cut into cute shapes with the cookie cutter of your choice.
Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
For a softer cookie, remove immediately, cool, then refrigerate in an air tight container.
For a crisp cookie, turn off the oven and leave the cookies in it for an hour or two before refrigerating in an air tight container.
Cat Attack Cookies
- 1 cup whole-wheat flour
- 1/4 cup soy flour
- 1 tsp. dried catnip
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup milk (low-fat for older animals)
- 2 tbsp. wheat germ
- 1/3 cup non-fat powdered milk
- 1 tbsp. unsulfured molasses
- 2 tbsp. butter, vegetable oil, canola oil, or bacon grease
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix dry ingredients together.
Add molasses, egg, oil and milk.
Roll out flat onto oiled cookie sheet and cut into small, cat bite-sized pieces with a knife or cookie cutter.
Bake for 20 minutes.
Let cool and store in tightly sealed container.
Catnip Tea
- 2 tbsp. dried catnip
- 1 cup warm water
Place catnip in a bottle, pour in water.
Place cap on bottle, and shake until the catnip tea is green.
Feed to cat in a bowl or dish.
Cheese Turkey Balls
- 1 1/2 lbs. ground turkey
- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup steamed and mashed sweet potatoes, cooled
- 1 cup quick oats
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl.
Roll into 1-inch balls, place them on a non greased baking sheet and bake for 15 min. or until golden brown. -Keep refrigerated in a air tight container. -Freeze any that won't be used within a couple of days.
Note: These are great treats to use when training and can be easily broken into smaller pieces.
Crunchy Tuna Balls
- 1 can tuna in water, drained
- 1/2 cup turkey or chicken, cooked and diced 2/3 cup dry cat food (your cat's favorite) Sliced vegetables, cooked and mashed (optional)
- Bread or other crumbs
Mix all ingredients in small bowl until well mixed.
Form into small balls or anything comfortable for your cat.
Chill for about an hour.
Roll balls in bread crumbs or other crumbs.
Kitty Krackers
- 1 6-ounce can undrained tuna (packed in oil)
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup unbleached flour
- 1/3 cup water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Measure all ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly with your hands.
Roll out to 1/4-inch thick and cut into treat-sized pieces with knife or cookie cutter.
Place on a greased cookie sheet.
Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden.
Let cool.
Yum Yum Cat Food
- 1/2 cup milk (low-fat for older cats)
- 3 slices meat, 2 veggies, or 4 crab sticks (whatever your cat prefers)
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup unbleached flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix all ingredients together until they form a dough.
Roll out to about 1/2-inch thick.
Use cookie cutter to cut into small shapes.
Bake until golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes.
