Red Sox Nation

By Sherril Steele-Carlin

We are indeed a Red Sox Nation. The Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years, and fans all over the world went crazy. Baseball is an enduring sport, but some fans just seem to be more preserving than others. The Red Sox fans certainly held on and "believed." Here's a short history of the Sox, and their quest for World Series fame.

The Beginnings

Originally known as the Boston Americans, the team began its' career in 1901, playing at the Highland Avenue Grounds from 1901 to 1911, when Fenway Park opened. (See a related story on Fenway Park on this site) A charter member of the American League, the team changed their name to the Red Sox in 1907. They won World Series titles in 1903, 1912, 1915, and again in 1918, before their streak of 86 years without a series win.

Some Famous Sox Players

Babe Ruth played for the Red Sox from 1914 through 1920, when he was traded to the New York Yankees. This began the idea of the "curse of the Bambino" (Ruth's nickname), that plagued Boston until 2004. Many people believed Ruth, who was an outstanding pitcher and hitter, should not have been traded, and so the Sox were cursed never to win a Series after the trade.

Another famous player was Cy Young, who was one of the greatest pitchers who ever lived. He set numerous major-league career records that still hold up to modern players, including the most wins, most innings pitched, and most complete games. Young played with the Red Sox from 1901 to 1908, won 511 games during his 22-year career.

Slugger Ted Williams played for the Sox from 1939 through 1960. His career batting average was 344, and he hit 521 career home runs. Williams is still a legend in the sports world, and these three players indicate the depth and overall strength of the Red Sox organization.

Today

Today, the Red Sox are again world champions. They are one of the few remaining teams to still play in one of the old-time stadiums that went out of fashion in the 60s, and are now making a comeback. The team set records in 2004, and it is certain they will do it in the future. One of the most enduring teams in baseball, they inspire loyalty around the world, and it seems they have earned the respect of their fans. As Boston celebrates the World Series victory, so hard fought, they can rest assured America is indeed a Red Sox Nation, and their hearts are behind the happy citizens of Boston, New England, and everywhere fans can say "I believe."
