Gateway to the Rockies: Colorado Springs
By Jonathan Berohn
Usually when the topic of great places to visit in Colorado comes up, you hear about Denver, Boulder, and the numerous ski resort towns like Vail, Aspen, and Telluride. Leaving Colorado Springs off that list, though, is an oversight that will leave any visitor with an incomplete picture of Colorado and make them miss some fascinating and impressive sights and attractions.
Natural Wonders
The most obvious feature of Colorado Springs is the summit of Pike’s Peak that juts majestically from behind the city. Ascending the summit of Pike’s Peak is something every visitor should do once. You can choose to go by car or opt for the cog railroad. Neither option is particularly cheap (they charge you by the passenger to drive up the mountain), but the railroad leaves everyone free to enjoy the scenery. Pike’s Peak is far from the only natural attraction in the area though.
Garden of the Gods Park is the most incredible urban park I’ve ever seen. Nestled right next the major urban corridor, Garden of the Gods is full of sandstone spires and formations that will take your breath away. The hiking paths are even paved for easy family outings.
Tradition and Excellence
Another well-known Colorado Springs landmark is the Air Force Academy. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot to see there for tourists, but the vista is impressive, and the visitor center is worth a quick visit. It’s one of those places that you will want to add to your itinerary, but don’t plan on spending more than an hour there.
Right downtown, however, is another facility for young people that can keep you fascinated for hours. The US Olympic Training Center is in Colorado Springs, and it offers regular tours throughout the day. If you happen to be there for a competition, you can stick around and watch the best amateur athletes in the country compete for free.
Dining and Nightlife
Like many Colorado cities, downtown Colorado Springs has experienced a revival of late. There are now many new restaurants, bars, and pubs concentrated in a few block downtown. If you really want to make a special outing out your trip, though, head for the Broadmoor. The Broadmoor is Colorado Springs’ flagship hotel. It boasts excellent dining as well as a golf course that has recently hosted the Women’s US Open.
All in all, Colorado Springs and plenty to offer. It certainly ranks right up there with great places to visit in Colorado.
