Wildlife in the Heart of the Pocono Mountains
By Michele Blandino
Perhaps one of the best kept secrets of the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountain region is Claws ‘n Paws Wild Animal Park. Located in close proximity to Lake Wallenpaupak - Pennsylvania’s largest man-made lake and a popular vacation destination for many families - Claws ‘n Paws makes a great day trip destination.
While the specific roster of animals that may be on the grounds periodically changes, you can expect to find various species of tigers, a giraffe, bears, lions, bison and monkeys. There are also plenty of birds, snakes and reptiles. All of the animals are kept in surroundings that closely resemble their natural habitats which not only makes them more interesting to observe, but also provides a good educational experience.
For those who prefer a more personal experience, there are special “feeding times” where you can feed a parrot or a giraffe. There is also a petting zoo that contains gentle deer, lambs and goats. Young paleontologists will probably enjoy the Dino Dig which provides them the opportunity to hunt for “fossils” in the park’s Dinosaur Outpost. Finally, there are two daily animal shows which feature baby animals, parrots and reptiles.
Claws ‘n Paws Wild Animal Park is open seven days a week from early May through the end of October. The park is located in a heavily wooded area which makes for pleasant visits on hot summer days. The admission price is reasonable - $10.95 for adults, $7.95 for children – and it includes admission to all of the shows and special exhibits. Best of all, you are free to remain in the park for as long as you like. The park’s website also has a coupon good for $1 off the admission price that you can print.
The Amenities
The park has a spacious picnic area where families can enjoy a lunch or snack. There is a snack bar that offers the customary fare, or you can feel free to pack your own lunch. There are plenty of restrooms and while they are a bit on the rustic side, they are clean. There are also plenty of benches situated throughout the park where you can rest or simply sit and watch the animals.
