Going by Bus: The Road Less Traveled

By Michele Blandino

Let's face it: bus travel is kind of like the evil stepsister; you know it's there, but you choose to ignore it anyway. While busses were once heavily relied upon within the travel industry, the desire by most people to get where they have to go in the least amount of time possible has made faster modes of transportation such as trains and airplanes increasingly popular.

Still, the bus remains a fixture in our daily lives. Whether it is to ferry kids to school or part of a worker's daily commute, busses continue to faithfully complete their routes each day. Yet, when it comes time to make long distance travel arrangements, the bus remains far down on the list of viable options.

And that's unfortunate. Many people don't realize just how comfortable and hassle-free traveling by bus can actually be.

Most of the charter busses in service today are equipped with comfortable seats, restrooms, color television monitors, and powerful air purification systems. Looking for something a little more extravagant? Consider renting an executive travel bus; most boast amenities such as bedroom suites, a full bathroom, and even a gourmet kitchen.

Bus Tours

There are a number of advantages that bus tours have over airplane travel. First, traveling by bus allows for much more flexibility. For instance, last minute itinerary changes can be much more easily accommodated when there is not the added pressure of having to catch a flight. And, because busses can travel virtually anywhere, there is no need to plan a trip around the availability of airports and flights.

Next, due to the increase in the number of security checkpoints in our domestic airports, a one hour flight can turn into a three hour ordeal - not including the time it takes to travel to and from the airport. Since security screenings for chartered bus trips are usually done before the group departs, this type of delay is eliminated.

Finally, bus tours also allow the group to remain together while they travel. There is no need to be concerned about an airline overbooking a flight.

Not Just for Long Trips

Adding to their versatility is the fact that busses can be chartered for events such as weddings, family reunions and even proms. Aside from the obvious benefit of having a designated driver, having everyone traveling together usually adds a festive touch to many types of celebrations. And, it's not necessary to rent a full sized bus for smaller groups; many bus charter companies offer different options including mini-busses and trolleys.

While there will certainly be occasions when air or rail travel might be more efficient, bus travel should not be overlooked. You might be surprised by what you learn.
