When Using a Travel Agent may be a Good Idea

By Michele Blandino

With the increasing ease and convenience with which we can take care of most of our business via the Internet, it is no surprise that when it comes to making travel arrangements, many people choose to go it alone rather than ask a travel agent for help.

With so many different web sites offering promises of finding you the best deal, it hardly seems necessary to pay an additional fee to have someone else make your arrangements. Yet, under certain circumstances, that is precisely what you should do. When it comes to booking trips that involve travel overseas, finagling upgrades and locating rock-bottom prices, using a travel agent is your best bet.

First-Hand Knowledge

Because they often travel to the destinations and resorts they book for their customers, a travel agent often can give you a first-hand report on the available amenities, atmosphere and overall acceptability of your vacation destination. If you have a specific dietary requirement or need special assistance, often your travel agent will know just the person you need to speak with to make your needs known.

Finding the Best Deals

Travel agents know where to find the best deals. While they may use many of the same web sites as the ordinary consumer when planning a trip, they do have the added advantage of having access to the latest sale and promotional information. This means that a travel agent will likely be able to book your trip at a lower cost than if you did it yourself. Further, using a travel agent means you do not have to spend valuable time scouring the Internet for the best prices.

Getting the Perks

Travel agents generally have a cache of upgrades and other perks at their disposal that they can offer to their clients. This is especially true if you are a repeat customer. And, many of these perks are not advertised or available to those booking their trip via the Internet. What types of perks are offered? One example can be found in the cruise industry; for the price of a standard cruise cabin, your travel agent may very well make it possible for you to find yourself staying in deluxe accommodations.

A Helping Hand

If something should go wrong during your trip – the airplane or hotel is overbooked, your rental car isn’t ready, you miss a flight or someone gets sick – your travel agent will be able to help you do whatever is needed to fix the problem. This is particularly important when you are in a foreign country and unable to adequately communicate.

Like many other service providers, there are good travel agents and there are those who are not very good. So, how to you find a good travel agent? The best way is to solicit the advice of friends. Chances are, if they have been satisfied with the service they have received, so will you.

The ad in the newspaper offers a great discount on flights. So you wander into the travel agent, purchase the flight, and let that agent book the rest of your travel needs. This is fine if the travel agent is the right one for you. But if they're not, you may not end up with the best value, even with the cheap flights.
